Risk, Self-Regulation, and the Promise of Education
Steven J. Holochwost
Lehman College & the Graduate Center, City University of New
York
This presentation will review research conducted in the
Regulation, Education, and Neuroscience (ReNeu) Lab by Dr. Holochwost, his
students, and his colleagues. Broadly, this research examines three related
questions about children’s development and contextual influences on that
development: How do we define self- regulation in childhood, in terms of both
volitional processes and neurophysiological function? How do sociodemographic
risk and caregiver behaviors impinge upon self- regulation in childhood? And how
can access to high-quality educational opportunities disrupt the associations
between risk and children’s development?
Following the presentation, attendees will be
able to:
Explain the volitional processes and
neurophysiological bases of self-regulation in childhood.
Discuss how sociodemographic risk and caregiver
behaviors impinge upon self- regulation in childhood.
Explain how access to high-quality educational
opportunities may disrupt the associations between risk and children’s
development.
